How do I get an item removed from credit report

Hi Everybody, advice needed
My partner has a "poor" credit report
Basically, following a breakdown of her marriage over 7 yrs ago, she got lumbered with a debt (now at 54k) by her ex, who promptly declared bankrupt and got away scott free!
We have been advised that under the statute of limitations they can no longer chase the debt.
I have just got report via Experian and it shows it as a default and was registered back in 2003, no payments have been made ever towards the debt and it has been passed to various debt companies, no contact has been made for over 3 yrs from anyone.
So..
how do we get it removed from the credit score, as we are looking at applying for a mortgage etc and getting married, but this keeps coming up and stopping us obtaining any credit.
She could never afford to pay the debt and feels helpless as to what to do
can anybody offer any advice as to what to do next??

Hiya, statute of limitations is 6yrs in England & 5 yrs in Scotland. If you have neither 1) paid to the debt or 2) admitted the debt, in that period of time it will be statute barred. The default should also only stay on file for 6 yrs before it drops off your credit file.
As the default was placed in 2003 & if you have not paid/admitted to the debt since late 2004, I would suggest contacting all the cra's & tell them to remove.
Hope this helps0
