in a real panic - car insurance!
I've been driving without Insurance!!!
I am shocked and absolutely livid at the NFU....as got home tonight to a letter telling me that due to nonpayment my policy was cancelled with effect from the 17th february...have only received this tonight so basically have unknowingly been driving uninsured and as I taxed my car yesterday in effect have actually used invalid documents to do this.
I am absolutely fuming and will be on the phone to the NFU first thing tomorrow morning....I have not missed a payment but the only thing I can put it down to is changing my bank details to a new account, I phoned them up before the direct debit wth my old bank account was cancelled and was advised to make a card payment for february which I did there and then, I have just doublechecked my bank account and it went out on the 3rd Feb...I then filled in and the direct debit mandate with new account details to go from 5th March...so in a few days time....so am a little bit at a loss to be honest and just hope I can sort it out tomorrow as I've done nothing wrong but have unknowingly been breaking the law. What if I'd had an accident!!??!! or been pulled over by the police!!??!!
I'm now also panicking I won't be able to reinstate....I had a letter saying about the cancelled direct debit from my old account but had been told this was an auto letter and obviously had paid that months installment with card payment by time got it.

Get in touch with NFU immediately, and tell them there is confusion because of account transfers etc, and see if they will pause cancellation until it is sorted out.
If they know you INTEND to pay, I'm sure they would manage to work something out, after all, it will cost them NOTHING, unless you make a claim.0 -
Insurance companies now no longer need to send the cancellation of insurance letter by recorded delivery, aparently this has been the case for several years.
This could be another automatic letter, so check your car on the AskMID website, this will confirm if your car is currently insured.
Don't drive the car till you confirm that your Insurance is in place and the car is on the AskMID database.
Try not to worry about what may have happened, it is likely that this letter is just a mixup.0 -
See, this is what happens when you don't use premium insura... oh.0

Thanks for that website - have just checked and it is not showing as being insured. Don't worry I had no intentionj of driving until had sorted the insurance as mortified enough have apparently been driving for two weeks unknowingly uninsured.
I am so angry as I made a point of phoning them when knowing was changing the details of the account I paid with (as I did with all of my dd's) and have followed their advice i.e they said they did not think dd debit would be set up in time for last month february so paid via my card etc and my bank account is actually showing a live valid dd debit set up on my new account for this month.....so not sure what else I physically could have done in these circumstances not to avoid this happening....I'm so hoping its easy to sort out as I genuinely have done nothing wrong...well apart from follow thier advce regarding changing my bank details!!0 -

I'm hoping it is this simple to sort out...guessing the inrending to pay thing won't be difficult to prove seems I am up to date with the payments and have a current direct debit now set up on my new account!! So theoretically there has been no non-payment!! Seriously the whole thing is ludicrous and so stressful...which at 6 months pregnant really do not need!!!0 -
So.....a 'pregnant pause' in your driving history then?
Sorry....I DO sympathise, but I get this irresistable urge to try to bring a smile into troubled times.
(I know....I shouldn't have bothered!)0 -
phew....was sorted relatively easily! Cannot fault the NFU local office for their helpfulness and how apologetic they were. In fact they had actually already started querying this with the head office yesterday prior to me knowing! Must say it is nice to be able to out a face to the name with the local approach the NFU have with local offices etc... as opposed to a voice in a busy call centre!
The manager of the local branch is dealing with this now, and just awaiting the phonecall to say the insurance database is sorted and policy reinstated - which have his assurance it will be within the next hour or so!0 -

First of all don't panic, if for you had been a position where a claim would have been made, the insurance compnay would have been liable for their mistakes. You had paid, can prove you have paid therefore they would not have been allowed to use their mistakes as a reason for cancelling a policy. Secondly, the cancellation on your your policy would not effective, until you had actually received the letter. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
I'm very happy for you Josie! Nothing worse than being treated badly for something you haven't done.
Bet that's a weight off the Newbies mind too. Hope all goes well for you.0
