My car insurance renewal and being on a motability agreement

I am the appointee for my disabled brother who has a motability car. Last April some nasty person drove into it was seen by a witness that he checked the damage and drove off. The witness didn't give a statement and therefore the claim after 6 months changed to fault, as the company owning the lorry hitting the car denied all knowledge and got away with it.

The policy on the motabilty states motability as the policyholder and it's an open policy for anyone to drive caring for my brother. As I am the appointee do I need to declare this to my insurer, even though a) I'm not the policyholder and b) it's not my car it's my brothers, I feel sure if I mention I am the appointee with the car details at my address the policy will go up but if I don't in the event of an accident for my own car the database will pull this up. Seems a bit unfair as I am just a name as he can't deal with his own affairs.

Comments and advice please.

My daughter has a mobility car and I was under the impression that you are only insured to drive the car if you are named on the insurance. I`m named and so is she. If her father decides to take her out for the day and they want to share the driving, we have to change the insurance from my name to his name. Either that or pay extra to have her father named on the policy for as long as she has the car. Each timer we have done this mobility insurance company have never said we don`t have to do this.

I was also told by motorbility that any accident in her car whilst I am driving it, will impact on my insurance.
  • when I asked motablity they said it depended on the insurer, this is an open policy and anyone drive, including me. Fact is the accident wasn't anyones fault except the s*** that got away. It's not about who's insured but the fact I am 'the hirer' on behalf of my brother. Would this impact on my own insurance, if so that's not fair as I can't be held responsible for 10+ support workers.
