A rough guide to starter car insurance?

Firstly a bit of a background. I'm a man in my early 30's and am currently learning to drive, yeah I know I've left it a while but I'm almost there and hopefully I should have passed in about 2 months.
What I'm now researching is how much it's going to cost me get mobile once I've got my licence and I know insurance is going to be the biggest expense.
I'm trying to get a rough idea of how much it's likely to be for various cars but most insurance sites are making it difficult to say the least.
Firstly they require allot of personal information that quite frankly I'm not prepared to hand over until I'm sure I want to do business with them. I don't want my address and phone number floating on various databases thank you very much.
Secondly they insist on all sorts of specifics about including years of car make and even the registration plate, which at the moment is all theoretical.
Basically I'm after an economical runaround car for the first few years to build up my no claims, I don't commute a great distance and have no kids so I don't need a beast. All I'm after a rough guide to those sorts of cars and rough idea of the amounts they likely to cost me.
Are there any general sites anyone can point me to that don't require me to hand over personal information?
Thanks

in a word NO
they want to know your name ,age address, for location risks ,occupation again for risks ,if you a barman you may well drink then drive
how long you've had a licence etc, etc,
fill the forms in ,put in a made up mobile number. or an o;d pay as you go if you have one tick the box for no communications etc.
then cry at the cost of insurance quotes0 -
Made up name, close post code, made up phone number, insurers own email, type of car will do rather than reg number, you need to put in your own job, and driving history, and use moneysupermarket, or gocompare.0
