Credits for Parents and Carers

Hello, as I understand it credits for parents and carers is a mechanism to ensure that individuals keep up their ni record when not in work usually because of being one half of a working family where one parent works and the other looks after the children. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this?
Do the credits provide a full class 3 stamp for the financial year?
Also I noticed on the dwp website that the child that you are looking after has to be under the age of 12. Does that mean that you can only get these credits until the child is 12?
I believe this system was introduced in April. Many thanks.

It only covers your state pension so its not a full class 3 contribution and yes the child has to be under 12.0 -
Hello sunnyone-many thanks for that. Any idea why the credits stop once the child reaches 12. Seems early to me. 16 seems more sensible to me. Also if you receive these credits over a full financial year does that count as 1 full years contributions for the basic state pension? Thanks.0

I believe it stops at 12 because children over 12 are usually mature enough to be left alone for short periods of time, i.e. between school finishing at 3:30 and a parent getting home at 6pm. Whereas under 12 is considered to be too young to be left alone.

Hi, just to clarify this. I am full time carer for a disabled child who is 12. I thought I got NI Credits, regardless of his age, because he gets DLA.
Is this correct?0 -
Do you get carers allowance?0
