Thinking of moving and relocating

Hi Everyone I have so many questions buzzing around in my head it is unbelievable. We live in Nottinghamshire in a three bedroomed mid terrace property which was built in 1890. My Hubby has applied for a promotion in his company but unfortunatley it is in Swindon Wiltshire so it means if he gets it we will be relocating. I work at same company to so I should be transferred. We have a mortgage on the property we in now but only have 15k left to pay and we overpay £100 a month.
The questions are if we move down to swindon
Do we still pay Council tax and Water rates on the property in Notts ?
We are looking to sell as soon as we know he has the job but we want a quick sale but a bit worried as it is a old house and worried what surveyor report will say ?
Has anyone relocated with a house still to sell ?
The house in Notts has had a lot of work done on it ie New Kitchen,New Roof,New Bathroom, new front and back door, Concrete garage erected, Electrics redone,New interior doors throughout,New guttering,New back fence put up. We originally bought the house for 24,000.
What Does a surveyor look for?
Help Me Please
Thanks oggy

Funnily enough, we're in Swindon and about to relocate to Lincoln as I've got a new job there. We've just put our house up for sale but we have been approved for another mortgage on a house in Lincoln without selling our Swindon home. The plan is to rent it out if there's no buyer by the end of April, so I guess we might be relocating before we sell ours!
If it's empty you may get 6 months free council tax, depends on your area. We're on a water meter so shouldn't be charged when the house is empty, but don't want to leave it empty for too long hence the rental plan if necessary.
If you are concerned about what a survey might highlight, why not get one done yourself? You could show it to potential buyers and gives you the chance to fix any issues in advance. We've just paid for a homebuyers survey on the one we're buying at a cost of £250, so they are not too expensive.
If you decide to move to Freshbrook let me know ;-) Lovely area, nice neighbours, very nice 3 bed end terrace for sale there....Live on £11k in 2011

You have to consider your insurance policy for exclusions relating to non-occupation and consider risks like squatting and undetected maintenance problems (leaking pipe).0

The Area we are hoping to relocate to is SN5 as we both work for DHL B&Q Distribution Centre and looking to relocate to the new Swindon DHL B&Q Distribution centre.
Not sure if that is freshbrook.
Hubby looking to go down before me is there any cheap B&Bs there which he can stop in during the week?
Thanks Oggy0 -

A few friends have stayed in the Travelodge on cheap deals. Not a recommendation as such, as I haven't stayed there and know nothing about it - I'd been looking on behalf of a student who may have been coming to help on a project then didn't - but this one seemed reasonably priced. I think there were a couple of others in the £25-30 per night bracket, will see if I can find them on my work computer tomorrow.

Dpending on timings, he might be better off looking for a short term Mon-Fri let in someone's house?
Freshbrook is SN5

Don't get excited about Swindon. Even the Mayor suggested knocking it down and starting again, a few years ago. It's a very odd town.
It does have Honda and the HQ of Nationwide Building Society as two big employers so its not a ghost town. The town centre is a chavtastic place to shop and there are buses.
Freshbrook is good as mentioned, but do avoid Toothill and Park South. Here is a link to your new local papers website. Read and enjoy. Welcome to Wiltshire.

http://www.a1treetopsguesthouse.co.uk/ that one looked reasonable too. I can't find the others I think I must have deleted them, sorry! You could try the tourist information for other options of places to stay?
To add to Incyder's post, I'd avoid any of the Swindon areas that begin with P - Penhill, Park South and North... and also Toothill. I think Incyder may be being a little unfair to Swindon - it's a very 'MSE' place to live, in that you can buy everything you need fairly cheaply, and houses within Swindon are much more sensibly priced than those in the villages outside! If you want go shopping anywhere more interesting, then Bath isn't too far away.Live on £11k in 2011

OP, the first thing I would do in your shoes is get a few EAs around to value your house and try to get a feeling for where you stand (saleability etc).
Posters on here are not going to be able to conclude much from the fact that you bought it for £24k (when???) and have done a lot of work to it since. You need to find out what other, similar properties in the area are selling for (sold prices, not asking prices).
If you're serious about the possibility of relocating, then you should also have a good look at your financial situation, see what mortgage offers are available to you. It's great that you've only got £15k left on your mortgage, hopefully you have some considerable equity in your house. However, a lot will depend on how old you both are (you must have bought the house some time ago at that price).
Armed with that information, there is no harm in starting to take a look at the market in the SN5 area. I think you may be better off renting initially, to get a feel for the area and the new jobs, unless you feel sure that you'll stay for a long time.
My DH stayed in a Travelodge in Newcastle several nights a week years ago. It was cheap but pretty grim - ok for a short time though.0
