Buying a used car

Hi folks,

I am in the process of looking to purchase a used car, preferably via a private sale via something i see on Auto Trader.

I have never done this before, does anyone know the best steps to take for this.

Is it best to have the cash in the form of a bankers cheque for a certain amount as I do not feel comfortable with taking in the region of £12000 around with me??

Also, any other tips i will need for this would be appreciated.

Have cash for a deposit of say £250. Print out a receipt for both you and the seller to sign - one copy each. Although the seller should issue the receipt it's better to be prepared.

If you carry a bank draft it will be debited from your account, a £25 fee charged, and in the name of the seller. Unless you're sure of buying the car it will be hard to revoke the draft if you don't like the car and leaves no room for negotiation. As a seller I would not release the car to you until the draft has cleared for fate. There are too many forged and stolen drafts.

Best option is to go to your bank with the seller and make a BACS transfer for £25 for the agreed price. If you both bank with the same bank then the process is easier.
