Bought credit card while under influence of alcohol

Someone I know was sold a credit card in a department store while he was under the influence of alcohol. He only bought one item (that he had inteded to pay cash for) and hasn't used the card since or done anything with it, including pay. The charges have increased to over £300.
Is it legal to sell credit to someone under the influence?

Given he 'bought' the card I'd take it back for a refund!

You were not 'sold' a credit card. You signed a credit agreement as an adult saying you understood the terms and conditions, which you should have read before signing.

It is not the stores responsibility to vet such things unless you were a child or have lack of understanding through disability. If you were that drunk that you feel you were coerced into signing an agreement maybe you shouldnt drink.

I'm not sure what you really mean when you say he "bought" credit, but why on earth should store staff be responsible for his decisions? It's not usual to breathalise someone before asking them to sign up for credit agreements! Your friend will have to take responsibility for his own mistakes (and learn from them).

Even if he did sign up while under the influence, why did he not just pay it off & not use it again?
  • He is solely to blame in this situation and clearly has a problem if he couldn't even pay the card off straight away.

I would also suggest that he can't have been that intoxicated that he didn't know what he was doing, as opening a store card takes a lot of information that needs to be passed over!

Surely the credit card takes a week or so to arrive?
