Agree with the asian suggestions - anything Hyundai/Kia/Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi will be fine and (in general) FAR more reliable than any western brand.
I currently have a K11 Micra I picked up off ebay for £400 at 46,000 miles and it has just ticket over 70,000 with nothing more than a brake pipe replacement (£80) and brake pads (£12), plus routine filters etc.0 -
Despite the recent surge in petrol prices the biggest cost of running a car is still depreciation. Buying a new prius does nothing for your wallet because it loses hundreds of pounds a month in value despite using less fuel than most cars. Your number one priority is getting something cheap and reliable.0

I have a VW Passat estate, I'm not suggesting you get one of these as its like driving a bus lol but a Bluemotion polo does 60+MPG maybe even 70MPG and build quality of VW tends to be good
I've just done a 130 mile round trip in mine and got 55.7 mpg at 70 mph + which is pretty good!!! :T:T0
