cheap car to run

hey,

as you may or may not know, I am still on my debt-free journey, which will be ending this April! :j:j

The reason for my LBM ws that I am going to university this year to study to become a midwife...

I need to save as MUCH as possible for this, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what the best car would be to get economically in terms of petrol (or diesel), insurance, tax and mileage etc?
I have learnt from my in-debt days....never again!

Just a point on Fiat... I have had so many problems with mine - bought it brand new in 2004 and literally as I drove off the forecourt the problems started... granted many were within the warranty time but a few (new clutch & exhaust!!) were not. I wouldn't ever have one again.

As my dad said when I brought it home "oh a Fiat... Fix It Again Tomorrow"
(know that's bit of a "tar with the same brush" comment, but many friends have Fiats and also have had lots of issues)

If you're looking at new cars what about the Toyota IQ or other little cars like the Aygo, C1 or 107?
Here to offer help and advice, and maybe take a little in return.

Whilst I am happy to share my knowledge, I am in no way a professional... I can not therefore accept responsibility for inaccurate info, I ask that you take professional advice rather than rely totally the info provided by myself

My Dad has got a little Peugeot 107 and he says its a brilliant little car. I am thinking of getting on when I start my driving lessons up again (and passh hopefully!). It's got great MPG! Okay so the boot space is rather tiny but you will have to weigh up what you want more in a car.
The old shape Ford Focus are going quite cheap now and they are smart looking as well. My fiance has one (okay so his is a 2.0 petrol) but even that is economical, you can get about 380/400 miles per tank. So if you get a 1.4, the MPG will only improve :)

    Hope this helps!

The Nissan micra is supposed to be quite reliable and very economical, my sister loves hers.

Avoid any second-hand Fiat 500's coming up for sale in the next year or so. BSM (driving school) have recently terminated their contract with Fiat so a load of these cars will soon be coming onto the second-hand market and if most of the learners drive anything like I do, their gearboxes and clutches will be in shreds! :rotfl:

  • if you want to buy secondhand for @ £2,000 you can get a peugeot 206 HDi, £35 per year tax, 'cheap' insurance(if there is such a thing!) and 60+ mpg.

Second hand or new? You won't pick up a fiat 500 cheaply!

If you don't want to spend money maintaining it and fixing it (which you will with a Fiat, a Peugeot or a Citroen) then Hyundai's or Toyotas are the way forward. The Yaris is bombproof, it'll just keep going and going (and does about 52mpg combined). Same goes for the I-10 but that does about 67mpg.

Personally i LOVE the new fiestas but they don't come cheap. Cheap to run though!
