1 day insurance clarification
I have a Vauxhall Vectra which is currently taxed but uninsured and sitting on my driveway. The reason being that I bought a new car which I am driving day-to-day and have insured fully comp.
I have just agreed the sell the Vectra and have agreed to drive the car to the buyers address 10 miles away.
Does my current insurance cover me to drive it with 3rd party cover or do I have to call them and "add it on"? I've looked at 1 day cover and the cheapest is £19.08 for 24 hours - not sure whether I need to do this.
Basically wanting to clarify what (if anything) does my existing fully comp cover me for in this scenario.

"driving other cars" usually says "not belonging to you".
Read your policy.
So if you have already sold the car when you drive it, maybe you are covered.
If it's only 10 miles, get the buyer to collect it.0 -
Your own fully comp usually counts for nothing in this situation.
The usual (but not universal) cover is that it provides minimum third party cover for a car NOT belonging to you, with the permission of the owner who should have his own insurance0 -
If your insurance does cover you Third party for other cars (and not all do), this is normally limited to "any vehicle not owned by or hired by the policyholder"
It might be cheaper to find one of your mates who has a policy that allows other cars to be driven and see if they will do it for you.
It may cost a few pints, but probably not £20 worth.0 -
As we haven't changed ownership yet (V5 and receipts to be signed upon delivery) - it still belongs to me. Hmm, as it's also very short notice I may have to stump up the £20. I got slightly more than I was expecting for the car anyway, so that little bit extra covers the £20.
Delivery was part of the deal - so buyer collection isn't going to be possible - shame.0 -
What's the new owner going to do, re insurance. Can't he insure it and you go and get him to drive the car home?0

Its not about ownership its about the "other car" already being insured for you to drive it 3rd party0

No - the ownership is the big issue.
Most DOC extension will have the condition that the car is NOT owned by the driver intending to use the third party.
(The "other car" doesn't have to be insured unless that is a condition of the DOC extension)0 -

From what I understand, he is not insuring it immediately, as the car needs a bit of work doing (it is currently roadworthy though, I may add). I think he's going to work on it in his garage.
Not really my problem though - the deal we agreed was that I would deliver to him at a specific time.
I've paid the £19 to make sure I am deffo covered. Last thing I need is being pulled and having the car impounded, getting points, paying to release the car, losing a sale, etc.0 -
Your car is taxed, therefore under the new rules it must be insured or the DVLA will automatcially issue a £100 fixed penalty notice which you will have to pay as the car is still in your name. Likewise the new owner will have to insure it from day one or declare it SORN otheriwse he will get a £100 FPN.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
