When we talk about a shortage of "resources," most people immediately think "oil." But the only reason oil is the most famous of the dwindling resources is because we feel the spike in prices, since we have to go buy the stuff ourselves on a weekly basis.


But other resources that are key to keeping our society operating are running out just as fast, but much more quietly. Pretty soon, you may turn on CNN to hear about wars being fought over something ridiculous, like ...

    I knew about helium, water is debatable.... The rest was new to me, although I suspect some of it's also debatable.

    Helium was interesting, I inhaled about £40's worth at the weekend by the looks of it.

    How can we run out of water, surely it just gets recycled or is just in the wrong place.

    When I was living in Florida, there was a big debate going on concerning the possible site of a desalination plant, somewhere on the Gulf Coast. (and that was 10 years ago)

    Some parts of the world get all their potable water from deep underground aquifers that don't replenish ("fossil aquifers"), so they are essentially mining their water.
