Displaying valid tax disc - different for hire cars?
Okay so I have a hire car through Ford while my car is in the garage.. the cars tax expires today so I called them up yesterday afternoon.. they said they couldn't get the replacement tax disc to me (monday) but would try and get it to me at some point today.
So I said to them it's an offence for me to drive it around without a valid tax disc in the window, and the lady said 'it isn't, it's different for hire cars'
is this correct? as i don't believe it is.
Just tried to call DVLA but struggling to get through to anyone.
Oh and I didn't take her word for it - i went and fetched it myself after work last night, which was an extra 25 miles added onto my trip home.

No it's not different. This thread here has a discussion about it:

As far as I can see it is an offense to drive a which is not displaying a valid tax disc.0 -
I had a quick search.. how did i miss that lol. Thanks
Didn't think it was right... she's the head of that department, so think a phone call is in order.
They definitely didn't order it online as they left the receipt with it from the PO.This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.0 -
Don't drive it! Ask them to bring you a different car if they cannot get the disc to you..0

I worked for Enterprise Rent a Car for 4 years - it is total rubbish that it is different for hire cars - they just can't be bothered to get the disk over to you.
And yes, you are liable.0 -

yeah i did say that but they said they had no cars what so ever, as majority of them had been taken off the road due to new reg. thats why i decided to go fetch it myself last night rather than risk being fined. This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.0 -
Time for me to disagree; slightly.
IF the hire company buys the new tax disc from the Direct.Gov website then they will get an extra 5 days. I purchased my new tax disc online about 10 days ago and it does now state that.Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -

Complain, and ask for compensation for your time and expenses incurred thanks to their incompetence!
And next time they tell you they cannot get a tax disc out to you, ask them to use a courier (eg a taxi!)0 -

True, however the OP's tax disc came from the PO.0 -

I understand what you are saying but the OP has said in post#3 that the garage bought the tax disc from the post office.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
Lazy company but if they have the disc, then your not going to be troubled by an ANPR flash. The seperate offence of failing to display would only come about if you got stopped for something else and failed the attitude test.0
