It's not that simple though is it? In a country with no welfare state, if you don't have children then who looks after you later in life when you can't do the farming yourself? Also the mindset of someone who lives in that situation will be different, as it becomes 'normal' - using your logic above the population of Britain would have died out in the Victorian era.
