Santander has Lost DH's Pay - Urgent

Santander has completely messed up. DH's salary has been lost. They changed this month from Telepay to BACS and the payment was made by Lloyds TSB last week, due to come into his account by the 28th.

It has not turned up. He has confirmed with Lloyds that they payment was made to the correct account. Santander say they can not see it and they can not confirm it has been made as they can not contact the BACS payment team. They are advising that his work issue a recall and repay the money, but all of the standing orders and most of the direct debits have not gone out. He has been told he will be charged the fees.

What can we do? I can not believe that this is happening. My biggest concern is that our rent has not gone out and she is an 87 year old woman who depends on our income. I have money that I can pay her with, but we couldn't afford to pay rent twice in a month if Santander decides to withdraw the money anyway, and they can't confirm what will happen. Ooh, AND the money is in Santander, so it would take days for it to clear anyway.

The rest of the standing orders will be OK to be late (mostly money between various accounts) and its just one DD that is for Southern Electric that we will be able to pay tomorrow.

Our plan is to transfer all of the money out as soon as it comes in to another bank account and pay all of the DDs manually, then close the account as soon as we can. Is that reasonable? There is an overdraft, but (un)fortunately I am being made redundant and will be able to pay that off with my redundancy money.

ARGH!!!!!!!! :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Anyone have any advice or similar experiences? This is the second time they have royally messed up. THe first time someone in Santander set up a direct debit for someone else's loan into one of my savings accounts...

TIA

    Sounds more likely it's his employer who's messed up due to the change of systems, but when did they initiate the payments?

    i agree this is very unlikely to be the banks fault and more likely your employers.

    it seems to be very easy to jump on the lets blame santander band wagon but this is unlikely to be there error
  • change prob affected it during that
    Santander normally can track BACS payments easily

    As others have said - unlikely to be the Bank so it's a bit silly to close the account merely because of this.

    If it's salary then it's more likely BACS Direct Credit rather than BACS. In which case (if Lloyds are the employer bank?) Lloyds don't make the payment ...... it's made centrally by BACS ..... and then should debit / credit Lloyds and Santander on the same day. Any trace should be made from the employer via BACS.

    Horrible situation to be in, and this is precisely the reason why I don't have any standing orders or direct debits due out of my account until at least 48 hours after my regular pay day.

    It's bad enough not getting paid on time. It's even worse when your bank the tells you you have x amount of failed payment charges to pay once you do see your wages!

    I've not paid a single late/failed payment/overlimit charge this millennium, and long may that continue. :beer:
