Sorry I rarely post over here but I need help beofre I launch several laptops out the window..
I moved house 6 weeks ago and we had virgin media as BB supplier, home network was wireless using a belkin router... linked to that we have a PS3, Wii, laptop running windows 7, and 2 laptops running vista. When we moved Virgin kindly provided a new modem that is also a router. PS3 wii and windows 7 laptop all connect up fine with no issues. I do have a huge issue when I try and connect my 'work' laptop running vista as in i get 'unidentified network local access only' and basically can't go online. I assumed something was up with that laptop and i'm on maternity leave anyway so i jst but it to the side to deal with later.. Now my oldest child wants to 'play' online IE the playhouse disney/cebeebies website so I attempted to ressurect an old advent laptop we have running vista and that has the same problem.
Both laptops will connect to my parents wireless network ok which is also virgin media but an older style modem with seperate router set up..
It's driving me loopy...

What firewalls do the laptops have?
Whats the exact make and model of the new modem/router?:idea:0 -
I had the exact same problem and it is due to the wireless N function on the new modems/routers, I bet you have a Atheros wireless card on your laptop and vista (oops you already said vista), I solved mine by updating the driver to the most current off of the Atheros website
Look in your device manager at the wireless card name and get the most recent driver from here
http://www.atheros.cz/
Hope it helps:beer:0 -
Kings you may well of hit nail on the head.. it is atheros wireless cards in both the affected lappys. i'll get the driver off that site when i find a usb drive.. ethernet cables and my pen drives are in godknows what box after the move.. TYPICAL.
Alienrik - just running the windows firewall on both lappys.. the modem router thing is a netgear virgim media gateway VMDG on the side..MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000

if it is the wireless N function and you cant update drivers, you should be able to log into the router and change the type of wireless it uses:idea:0

Just change the wireless option in the router to use B/G instead of N.
Refresh your network connection and your good to go.0
