How is it that Gaddafi's assets can be frozen?

I've got to ask, Juggler, exactly what kind of proof do you need? Journalistic evidence, film, audio and written accounts have been sufficient for the UN - do you have a higher standard of reasonable doubt?

A little more than vague reports..there is still no absolute proof on what is going on..perhaps gaddafi loyalists are acting without the authority of gaddafi? perhaps he hasn't even authorised the shooting of protestors, and it is another group commiting the acts..

the points is..you don't know...and the people who froze the assets sure as hell don't know exactly what the story is...so how do I ask, do they have the authority...

and why stop there? what about all the saudi billionaires with investments in the UK and US? I'm sure there is a level of criminality going on with some of them...do they only freeze the assets of people who make headline news?

the point is, the law seems to be anything but strict, and bends and twists depending on how the elite powerful feel at that moment

There are many very rich dictators who have invested heavily in the UK. By acting in this way we may find that a.n.others decide to invest their wealth in other countries.

The interest rates are so low on savings accounts at the moment anyway so I doubt anyone would want to invest in this country. :D

TBH, when I heard about the "asset freezing" on the news last night I just thought it was political soundbyting.

Since this action is sanctioned by the EU, I would imagine that they have means of gathering information above and beyond having one of the work experience lads watch BBC News.

There is a difference between the back door dealings of Saudi Billionairres which, by there nature must be secretive and the very public use of military force against a countries population. In those cases it takes time to gather evidence and compile a case, evidence which generally would need to be gathered in foreign countries where jurisdiction is an issue. Add to that the fact that it's not in the interest of the Western World to mess with some of the most powerful individuals on the planet for a bit of money laundering, self serving and hypocritical but that's just how the world works.

Much of London prime business and residential property and a large chunk of UK business is owned by johnny foreigner. If they were all to take their money elsewhere we could see a far bigger impact on our fragile ecconomy than the bank crash.

Would that be the same means they used to gather evidence of the WMD before sanctioning the invasion of Iraq?
