The named driver on my insurance got word today he has been caught speeding, It was a form came to his work asking for driver deatils, filled it in and work sending it back today. I know they will then send the fixed penalty notice to him direct but I have a few questions.

Once he gets the fixed penalty notice how long do you get to pay ?

I know I need to inform insurance but when ? I was going to ring them tomorrow or do I need to wait until he recieves the notice?

thanks

  • Wait until he gets the points. He may not even get any - possibly a Speed Awareness course which AFAIK does not need to be reported.

It needs to be declared nowadays. Usually a specific question in acccidents and convictions about it.

and if he does get points rather than speed awareness then your policy will tell you exactly when you need to notify them. At renewal is common.

Stick to what your policy says and try to resist the temptation to ring and ask them as it only confuses them.

    When did that change?

I attended one about three years ago and MrsLA attended one about 15 months ago and we were both told that it did not need to be declared to our insurers.

If you take an awareness course you don't have to tell your insurance company as the offence is "cancelled".

A quick google search found this (see under 'Course Costs'): www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/roadsafety/drivertraining/staffordshirespeedawareness/

It isn’t a conviction so doesn’t need to be declared if they only ask about convictions.

If they ask about speed awareness courses then, as always, you must answer truthfully.

That doesn’t sound specific enough for a policy, have another look.

Mine has three sections, “you must tell us……..”

“Before” includes changing car or allowing a new driver to use it etc

“As soon as possible” covers accident & incidents etc

    “At renewal” covers convictions etc

I’d be surprised if yours was any different
