Straight onto sickness benefit.

Hello, I have neither worked or claimed for about 5 years living on my savings not wishing to be mucked about by the dole. I have now run out of money and also feel that I am incapable of work. I now wish to go back into the system, as it were, but do not know where to start. Do I have to claim for jsa then go to the doctor and discuss the medical problem which I have put up with but is getting worse (which inevitably I will have to do either way) and then he gives me a sick note. I do not understand the benefits system. Thanks.

If you are too sick to work, apply for ESA

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/esa/DG_171894

If you have mobility or care needs, look into DLA

If you rent a property, you can find out your Local Housing Allowance on the LHA Direct website - you apply for this through your local council.

You can check your overall benefit entitlement on the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

What other household income do you have? According to your other posts you have children, do you have a partner who works?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Hello, Yes, I do have a child. My partner is in receipt of working tax credit, child tax credit and income from work all in all about £15000. I looked after my mother and father at an address far apart whilst they were dying receiving nothing from the state. That is the only income. Thanks.

As you have been out of work for so long, you will not qualify for CB benefits and your partner's income will be too high for means tested benefits. However you can put in a claim for ESA on a credits only basis.
