If your account has been hacked then the offending emails will be in your 'Sent' folder. If not, then it's just address spoofing, which is nothing to worry about.

So you've scanned for malware and found nothing, and discovered that the sent emails are in your "sent mail" folder? In that case, the username/password for your email account are being used by a third-party (probably an automated tool).

Change your password and you should be fine so long as it's not a password that you've used before and is fairly cryptic (long, contains numerical and mixed-case characters).

Personally I'd also try scanning your PC with your antivirus, Spybot, and an online virus scanner to be as sure as you can be that your PC is clean.

    bargainsearcher,
The reason I mentioned AOL was that the same thing has happened to me twice, it's happened to my wife, and also to a couple of my mates (all on AOL).

I know it's happened to people with other ISP's, but problems like this do appear to be more common on AOL than the other providers.

It's because you've all set relatively weak passwords.

After posting for help I changed my password and created a sign in seal. I have deleted an AOL toolbar (forgotten about) that was never used after bargainsearcher said AOL had some problems that way. Spybot asked me to delete Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Live Essantials due to conflict which I haven't done yet because I was worried about being able to reinstall them again. I have downloaded and am frequently scanning with AVG which is free for two weeks. Is it as good as Spybot? Just have to wait and see now.

I would hardly call a 12 character (7 letters, 2 of which are upper case and 5 numbers) password to be "relatively weak".

AVG is an antivirus; spybot is anti-malware application. So the products aren't in direct competition - they're complementary. Both AVG and Spybot are good products worth having.

In addition to an antivirus (I use Avira, but may switch back to AVG), I have Spybot, SpywareBlaster, MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and Secunia PSI on my Windows PCs.

In addition, I use Firefox with the Adblock Plus and NoScript add-ons, which make web browsing as safe as it can be.

P.S. You know there's a completely free version of AVG, right? It sounds like you must be trialling a premium version.
