i spent nearly 10 years repairing washing machines, i can tell you in all honesty that you dont need any of that calgon rubbish, use tablets in the drum instead of using the drawer for soap powder, clean your filter every six months, job's a goodun , its all sales hype and rubbish, like the dishwasher tablets that contain salt, they were made by somebody who has NO IDEA how a dishwasher works or why they need salt, the salt is needed to replenish the water softner crystals, there is NO WAY salt can get to those crystals if you put it in the dishwasher, it dissolves then gets pumped down the drain like everything else so is just a waste of money, also special cleaning stuff that you put inside your dishwasher-utter rubbish once again, EVERY time you use your dishwasher you add detergent and it uses hot water to complete the cycle, so spending excess money on detergent to "clean" it is just a waste of money, i have seen heating elements go in washing machines regardless of scale or water hardness

I use and like liquid tabs which go in the drum. I have very few whites, far too few to run a white only wash so I don't need bleach. I put liquid conditioner in the drawer.

I've heard about liquid tabs causing a problem and gunking up the machine and making it smell but I haven't experienced that. Then I hear you should perhaps use a tablet on high temperature now and then - right ? wrong ? is there really a need to clean a washing machine ?

Not worrying but I've just spent a good few hundred quid on the machine and would like to keep it in tip top nick so to speak. Thanks.

I have found the best advice for washing machines, buying, using, repairing etc on http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/ It is independent and I knew the web site owner from another forum years ago and he is a genuine guy. We have repaired our own machine using the helpful edvice on this site.

See the washing machine usage section where he explains about calgon etc in nice simple terms.

Sorry but it was all these multiple threads over many years which caused the confusion. I personally think all these links and reverse links do not help. That is where the search function comes in.
