Gap Insurance for a contract hire agreement

About to take delivery of new car for 24month period - the dealer talked about GAP insurance should car be stolen or written off etc - is this necessary if we have our own insurance on the vehicle as surely ins co will pay out if writen off etc
advice welcomed
ps if yes we should take - is it better to arrange independly and cheaper?
