Can't watch films off external hard drive on my LG tv...

Does anyone else have this problem? We splashed out on a 50" LG tv that has USB socket amongst other ports so we could watch films we had downloaded by plugging in our external hard drive. It doesn't work - it only recognises music and images that are on the hard drive :( It works on our tecnica tv upstairs (i.e. it plays movies) so I know it is not the hard drive.

Any ideas why the LG does not let us play movies? I wouldn't have got this tv if I thought it wouldn't play downloaded movies. Hope you know what I mean cos I am not the best at explaining techie stuff :)

AFAIK, they ONLY show images and play music, they don't support playing movies/divx/iso from USB. I got bitten by this too.

That said, all is not lost - a simple add on box and a HDMI cable (under £20) should allow you to do what you want.

Although it's upscaling, it looks fine on my 50" LG. I was gobsmacked for the money. Only downside is the LG remote 'decrease volume' button stops playback as they seem to share some remote keys.

They have some others - as I'm sure do many other outlets.

    HTH

Or if you want full HD
  • There is a firmware hack for LG to enable USB movie playback.

Indeed. I talks of how DOWNGRADING the firmware to 3.15 can end up in bricking a very expensive TV.

Not sure I'd want to do that for the sake of a £20 media player, but some folk are probably OK with it.

Model no. ? Is it a pk series or a discontinued model ?
  • I have just googled and I don't fancy ruining my brand new telly by messing with the firmware. I think I will be better off with doing what you suggest Mr_Oink. Will this definately work though? Don't fancy wasting any more money...

    Spakkker, model number is 50P J350 :)

Using one myself and love it. For £20 with a lead you can't really go wrong. If for any reason you don't like it, just return it. :)
  • Thanks Mr Oink, i'll order one now :)

I bought a Sumvision Cyclone from http://www.zoombits.co.uk last year (about the same price as from ebuyer) - have to say it does a great job! It's certainly much better than watching on a laptop screen, and is well worth the money - it's a brilliant device.

    Your tv - http://www.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-plasma-tv-50PJ350.jsp
Says pics + music. I have an ld450 series and haven't tried the hack because I have media player and sat with usb that plays most stuff.
You should be getting the Cyclone mk2 tho' as it plays mkv files and h.264 - these are to blu-ray like mp3 to CD, and will be more and more common.
