Can't watch films off external hard drive on my LG tv...

The thing is mkv / mt2s / h.264 are all hd formats and will be more and more in the future.
Remember when cd players couldn't play mp3s ? Now look where mp3s are -everywhere.
You have just got a tv that plays hd(720p) so why stick to a non-hd source ? Sky now have 50 HD channels.
Mk2 may be still out of stock at ebuyer , just ask when due.
