My Car is Poorly Sick HELP!

Hi there,
I have a Ford Fiesta 51 plate with a very ill clutch and cylinder. I have rang around recommended garages, friends garages, garages I've never used, garages I have used and it's looking likely it will cost me about £300 (best quote £275 worst £471). In a cruel twist of fate, I have just been given £300 off my Grandma and used it to pay off a little debt I had the next day, my car broke! (or I should say I realised it was broken). Now I have no cash to pay this, no credit facilities (blessing in disguise I guess), and am facing being car-less which just isn't an option for me.
If anyone has any advice on how much a clutch and cylinder replacement should cost, I would be really appreciative.
Thanks,
Katy

I'm afraid those prices sound about right.

It doesn't matter what we say it should cost, it matters what it costs at the garage you take it to. Bear in mind cheapest isn't always best, so try and get recommendations. And don't take it to a dealer, because they will charge you 3X the price and do it wrong.0

Not sure if fiestas have a hydraulic clutch system. I always thought that fiestas had a cable operated system with no cylinder.
If it is a hydraulic system with a cylinder this should be sorted out before replacing the clutch.0 -
Certainly the Mk3 & 4 have cable clutch. But wouldn't even want to guess on a '51Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0

I think that age will have the concentric slave cylinder (inside the bell-housing) so your best getting the whole thing done when the gearbox is off.0

Thank you all very much
Yes, it's that Slave Cylinder thing and I've got a garage to do it for £295 including VAT, parts, labour, AND... 12 month warranty on the work - I reckon that's alright? And that's what my garage said about having the gearbox off and doing it all together.
I've managed to borrow the money, doing a couple of carboots to try pay it back
Thank you all so much again
) put my mind at rest that I'm not getting ripped off

Is it just A.N. Other garage out the yellow pages or one recommended to you?katyboo123 wrote: »Thank you all very much

It's a Clutch specialist, called Clutch Express, they were just out of the Yellow Pages, every one of the garages recommended sucked the air in through their teeth and gave me similar prices EXCLUDING the Cylinder.
I hate not knowing anything about cars!!!!0 -
Look like a small chain, can't find any reviews for them so couldn't comment. Good luck.katyboo123 wrote: »It's a Clutch specialist, called Clutch Express, they were just out of the Yellow Pages, every one of the garages recommended sucked the air in through their teeth and gave me similar prices EXCLUDING the Cylinder.

With limited knowledge, how do you know it was clutch AND cylinder? And, which cylinder? Master cylinder or Slave cylinder? Ther are TWO if it's hydraulicaly operated.
To have a clutch fault yes, to have a cylinder (master or slave)fault yes, but to have a clutch AND cylinder fault at the same time, I don't believe it!
That's like getting two punctures in two front tyres at the same time! (Assuming you haven't been driving through broken glass or something.) In fact less likely than getting two punctures at the same time.
If the cylinder isn't working, the clutch won't be either, and might be perfectly O.K. when the cylinder is replaced.0
