Ford Focus Loss of Coolant

Hello
I own a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi on a 57 plate (50,000) and just recently it has started to lose coolant. Drops to about 3/4" below the min line on expansion tank. It's been in the garage and had the thermostate cover replaced as I was told there was a crack in it. But at the weekend as I did my check fluid levels , tyre pressure etc and wash and wax I noticed the level had dropped again ! I can't see any drips or leaks and the oil on the dip stick looked ok.

So any ideas or questions to ask when I pop it back to my garage, Oh no white trail behind me either !

Cheers
David

If they've changed the thermostat cover, it may just have dropped as air is purged from the system. Keep an eye on it.

I would not rule out the expansion cap seal. I've had that happen a few times in the past and when they do go, you don't get any signs of leaks because they'll only do it very slightly and the water evaporates.

Have you checked under the oil filler cap? Any mayo looking stuff there? If so it could be a head gasket.

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

You'd hope not on a '57 plate

More likely that it was only topped up to min when the work was done, and the level looks below min when the engine is cool. If it's still low after a good run then you may have a problem, but the level increases with the engine temp.

  • Many thanks for your help folks. Phoned garage and the mechanic said it maybe an air lock. Was told to top it up and keep an eye on it for another week. I have a couple of long runs due this week and weekend so I will report back. Oil on th dip stick looked ok, but I will have a look at the filler cap tomorrow. May even get a new expansion cap or seal aswell.

    Many Thanks
