Feeling terrible

Due to an emergency, I have been on my own with the child I look after for a week, barring yesterday when he went to his dad's. It has gone really well, he has been good as gold and we have both enjoyed it.:)

This morning I was sorting washing and he was on all fours being a dog:p Suddenly I heard a whack and a scream as he turned round and hit his head/face on the wall:eek: A cold compress and big cuddle later he is bouncy as ever, but growing an amazing bruise. I feel absolutely terrible and am shaking still, even though it happened 2hrs ago:( Ive phoned his dad who was very matter of fact, these things happen, but I am devastated it happened in my care.

Oh hun, his dad is right, all children have accidents like that. I know it's 1000 times worse when it's not your child, just keep and eye on him, I'm sure you know what to look out for. He's probably forgotten all about it, while left you're feeling rotten!

Kids are kids, and often don't have full developmental control of their bodies - so they tend to fall over, spin round without thinking etc etc. These things do happen especially if you are giving them valuable freedom to explore their own imagination. He turned round and hit a wall - short of forcing him to sit still permanently or padding all the walls, its unavoidable - if he'd picked up a knife you'd carelessly left around, or pulled a hot iron onto himself then you might have reasons to feel guilty but sometimes stuff just happens. He needs to learn that spontaneous actions can have consequences - next time he might quickly check how close the wall is before he spins round - which in turn will be preparation for adult activities like driving. He's fine, Dad is sensibly fine about it, you've done all the right things so far so just enjoy the rest of the day with him. For what its worth, its also not worth keep going on about it - he's forgotten and moved on so don't keep reminding him by checking his bruise etc - obviously keep an eye on him, but don't keep bringing it up.

  • Thanks, I know you are right, and if it had been anyone else I would be the same! I also know these things happen - I broke my nose doing something very similar so at least this is just bruising!

He is fine in himself, thank goodness, and is pretending to be a princess now:rotfl:I'm not going to mention it again to him, but can't promise I wont be checking the bruises, I'll just do it while cuddling him:p

Faithcecelia these things happen and you've got nothing to feel guilty for. I've had to deal with a broken arm before and I thought my sister would kill me but kids will be kids and if they don't get any bumps, bruises or breaks then they wont learn about the world.
  • Ah try not too worry too much, the same thing happened to me last week ginormas bump and bruise. I explained it to the mum and she was fine. You cant stop them from doing everything and these things happen. X

Better a few bumps and bruises and an adventurous life than being wrapped up in cotton wool.

As a mum, I am always more worried about my nanny when these things happen than my children. The kids are inevitably fine, albeit with a bump or bruise, whilst the nanny is a wrung out wreck with guilt and worry about it by the end of the day!

If dad is ok about it, try to forget it and enjoy the rest of the day.

Yes, I sound like your nanny! I am breaking my heart over it whilst he is fine, completely his normal self, and has just bumped his leg on a chair as he is still jumping around!

Kids are kids - they will fall and bump themselves - as long as you are there to give them a kiss and cuddle and some reassurance! They have to play and learn it is impossible to keep an eye on them 24/7 and unfortunately bumps and scrapes are part of growing up.

Bairns do that sort of thing and you always feel much worse than they do.

When my middle one was two, he'd been bathed and was sent to tidy his bedroom while I got the eldest out of the bath and put his pyjamas on.

All of a sudden there was an almighty clatter and a scream as he'd climbed up on the windowsill and jumped off, landed on a truck and fell back and cracked his head off the radiator. It split, so we had to go to A&E and have his head glued back together.

That's just one in a very long list to make you feel better :D
Here I go again on my own....
