Jobseeker's or income support?????

Hi
Can anyone help us?????
My husband was made redundant before christmas, he has been claiming jobseekers allowance since.
We have 2 small children ( 3 years & 2 years old). I have just been diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid). I have been unwell for several months but, have just got the diagnosis.
There is no way at the moment that i could look after our 2 boys with the way I am feeling, so in a way i'm thankful hubby is home.
should we be claiming jobseekers or income support? hubby really cant start work at the moment he's caring for ours boys and looking after me??? just dont know what to do for the best?? I'm waiting to start Methotrexacate which is another concern, any advice would be very muchly appreciated....thank You. :(

you are not entitled to IS because you are not a single parent or carer.

If you have care or mobility needs you can claim DLA and if its awarded at middle or higher rate care he can claim carers allowance and income support if you fulfil the other conditions for it.

Methotrexate isnt a magic bullet for everyone, Ive tried three drugs and none have worked, one left me very ill and I couldnt have a planned general anestetic to have hand surgery. you will need weekly blood tests for some time after starting the drug (4 months in my case for this drug) and then monthly blood test for the lenght of time you take the drug.

    This isn't true.

To the OP, I don't know enough about IS to know if your husband can claim. Have you put your details into the benefits calculators below to see what they calculate you can claim?

Get your husband to call the DWP benefits line on 0800 055 6688 (they're open 8am-8pm) and discuss it with them. If he cannot claim IS, you may be able to claim Employment Support Allowance.

If you have care/mobility needs, have had them for at least 3 months and are expected to have them for at least a further 6 months you may be entitled to claim Disability Living Allowance

Under what grounds do you claim that they are eligable for IS?

They cant even get it under the "waiting to hear about a claim for DLA" criteria because they dont have a claim in.

I'm so sorry you have been diagnosed with RA, Im 61 now and was diagnosed with it at 40 and i know how painful and debilitating it is to start with.

I had all sorts of things and drugs, cortisone injections which were absolute magic for me, bet you feel at the moment that you cant see a light at the end of the tunnel, but i promise you there will come a time when it will settle down and you will hopefully get back to some degree of health. I just couldnt get rid of the pain, i slept downstairs, in 10 minute fits and starts, waking with the pain. I had gold injections for a number of years and they helped but then my body got used to them. My last lot of treatment was Oruvail (slow release) for about five years, my specialist slowly cut them down from 4 a day to 1 a day, and now in the last 5 years I have not taken a single arthritis drug, save for the odd paracetamol for when i over do it sometime (scraping taties) is a killer on my wrists next day so I have learned to pace myself.
I also have Pernicious Aneamia (sp) and osteoporosis but up till 18 months ago i still managed to work full time and then down to
3 days a week in semi retirement. So dont despair please and if you want more support, even just a chat, Im quite happy for you to ring me

I know I have strayed away from your original post but i really just wanted to give you some support.
    Hope you feel better soon.

I didn't say they were eligible for IS, I said that it's not just lone parents and carers who are eligible.
    Who can get Income Support

It's for people who all the following apply to:
    • are between age 16 and the age they can get Pension Credit
    • have a low income
    • work less than 16 hours a week
    • aren't in full-time study (but there are some exceptions)
    • don't get Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance
    • don't have savings above £16,000
    • live in Great Britain

You may get Income Support if you are one of the following:
    • a lone parent
    • on parental or paternity leave
    • a carer
    • a refugee learning English who arrived less than a year ago

I know the catagories entitled to IS, the post gave some information and I answered it on that information only, I was not wrong but you are because your copy and paste dosnt mention the catagory that they MAY be entitled to claim IS for if they apply for DLA which I mentioned above, maybe if you actually understood things instead of just googleing them you might be able to help posters.

Im sure everyone posting here can google, my 4 year old niece can.

My original post was just to give a link of where they can find information and application forms if they wanted it. I'm sorry if you think this wasn't suitable.

The OP needs to bear in mind, when considering making any claims, that her condition may well be stablised enabling her to lead a 'normal' life.
