Charity Collection Bags stolen

I can't believe the cheek of some people. I've just had 6 charity bags stolen from my driveway ready for collection tomorrow morning. They were for a legitimate charity. The people that stole them didn't take them all at once but took 4 and then came back for the last 2.

What should I do now?? I've phoned the police so that they are aware of this happening although I knew they would not be able to do anything more about it. Tomorrow morning I will phone the charity and inform them of what has happened but what can I do??

Any suggestions???

All help welcome

Thanks Pol

I'm curious as to how you know that 4 were stolen then they came back for 2? If you saw it then I would make a note of the description of the van or car and if you saw the registration plate a note of that too. might be worth trying to "bait" them with another few bags and keep watch until they come back for more. I don't think its unheard of for these people to become aware that there is a charity collection going on and nicking the bags before the charity gets there but I agree its an awful thing to do.

There's not a lot you can do unless you or a neighbour saw who took them and got a reg no.

It's rife at the moment as the price of textiles is quite high. You are better off dropping your items to charity directly.

  • The reason I know that 4 were taken first is because my mum went to the door with my dad when he left and noticed there were only 2 bags still on our driveway. I didn't see anyone but when I checked out of the window 15 minutes later the other 2 bags had gone.

I guess until yesterday day I didn't know that this was a regular issue with collections. I guess the only way to change this is to phone and arrange a collection time instead of leaving bags out for collection.

i collect bags for a local charity in the north east, can i say theft of the bags is very commen indeed and needs to be addresed properly by the police.
the hardest part of the job is putting the bags through the letterboxs about 1000 per day. then when it comes to collection day you find out they have been stolen it realy !!!!es me off. its shocking and needs sorting before the charitys and there staff throw in the towel,

On a linked but slightly different note!
I work for a charity shop, and have been shocked to discover that the goods the donate in bags are probably scrapped for rags-all of them.
I think many of our customer donate good stuff to them in the belief it will be brought to the shop and sold for good money, but it is not!
It's best to donate straight to a shop.

In my area its the same with the containers in car parks, they may be marked as for a specific charity but are emptied by the rag people so don't put anything in them that a charity can make decent money from in a shop.

I generally give directly to the charity shops, but on occasions leave a bag out. I am very wary at doing this as a lot of the bags seem dodgy themselves and after reading the above posts, I cant believe they scrap 'good stuff'!!

I had my suspicions this was happening. Now I try to leave the bags out in the morning of the collection. I suppose they still could be stolen. I've put bags out a day or two before and they have disappeared before the collection day.

Like someone said, the only way to ensure they get to the charity is to take them there yourself. Its so easy though just to leave them on your drive for collection.

I'm fed up of the amount of bogus charity bags I get, sometimes up to 5 a week. Tend to use them as bin liners.

Do any charity bag collectors bother to take back unused bags?
