Connecting IMAC G5 backup to PC?

We have an IMAC G5 and have set up the time capsule facility (- we back up to a generic external hard drive, not to an actual Apple Time Capsule machine.)
We are having problems with the IMAC G5 and I am worried about losing photos, documents etc.
We have to chose between paying quite a lot for repairs or biting the bullet and getting a new machine - we are currently unsure if we would stick with MAC or go back to PC considering the problems we have had.
So my queries are:
In what format are the back up files saved? Are they configured to be only compatible with IMACs from now on?
Or, can I connect the back up to a PC to access the files? and if so, how?
Or, must I connect the back up to another MAC to retrieve the files?
Sorry if this sounds basic/my terminology is wrong - we are MAC beginners and are finding it a steep learning curve!
Thanks in advance

Create a folder in Windows. Right Click on it and select Sharing. Make sure you give read and write privelidges to all users.
In Mac OS X Finder, you'll see the Windows computer listed. Click on it and it should show the shared folder. Simply copy files to that.0
