Never thought this could happen. She wrote a cheque to HMRC for her SA dated 31st Jan, HMRC presented it around the 25th to Natwest and Natwest must have said no given the date. The cheque was presented a few days later and cashed on the 31st but Natwest have charged her £5!! !!!!!!! How can they charge her given the cash was in her account??? Natwest tell her to take it up with HMRC who presented the cheque too early but I've said don't bother as she'll spend more in phone calls. What a farce, hoe can they be allowed to get away with this?

you are not supposed to date cheques for the future, so therefore no fault on HMRC or Natwest.Getting fit for 2013 - Starting weight 10.1.13 88.1kg

HMRC are not at fault here, your Mother is for post dating a cheque.
And Yes, I'm afraid they can charge her for doing this.
I'd advise her not to post date anymore cheques.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Why didnt she date the cheque the same date as she wrote it?0

I know what happened to the cheque, i wanted to know, if the cash was in her account, why she post dated it.0

sorry but what a load of old twaddle. natwest are idiots with their charges- hence their nick name 'Tw*t west' . everyone knows that!0

If the paying bank spots that it is post dated, it will return it with the reason given “post-dated cheque”. The payer generally won’t be charged for a technical reason like this but it will be inconvenient, both for the payer and the beneficiary.

you may not agree with their charges, but in this case the OP's mum is at fault, she should not have written a post dated cheque, end of.Getting fit for 2013 - Starting weight 10.1.13 88.1kg

I don't get why older people do this! I received a birthday cheque early and made a trip to town to pay it in, so I could spend it on my actual birthday & they noticed it wasn't dated till my birthday! I know it's ungrateful, but a wasted trip!!:j - DS - 7
