main dealer used car - missing items

Hi All,

Last week I bought a 2nd hand car from a Citroen dealer but after getting it home I realised that it was missing the owners manual and the parcel shelf. I am disappointed in myself for not noticing before driving away, do i have any chance of getting either if i ring up, and what cost to me? The salesman hadn't mentioned the absence of either when i purchased - was he obliged to unless I mentioned it?

Thanks in advance
Darryl

  • Easy done in the heat of the moment.

When you've made the phone call tomorrow you'll know whether to give this dealer any further business.

If they don't play ball make sure they never get another penny of your hard earned, and tell everyone you know what a bunch of crooks they are.

If they come up trumps you may have found a gem of a dealer.

Is the car you bought a Citroen?

    How old is it?

If it's a Citroen that is quite new I'd be pressing hard for both items to be provided foc.

If it's an old non-Citroen I'd be looking on ebay for an owners manual and in a scrapyard for a parcel shelf.

Somewhere between these two positions for anything in between.

I don't think he should mention either thing as they are obvious in the case of the shelf and not important in the case of the manual.

Owners manual can be picked up for a few pennies on eBay if you need to - got one for a car I bought in a private sale that came without one :)

The only essential book is the service book; is it there? However, any decent professional dealer will have replaced the books. The rear shelf is part and parcel (forgive the pun) of the car itself and should be there. Call the dealership and ask why it is not on the car. Do not be fobbed off with, "well, it wasn't there when you test drove it, so you can't assume it would have been there at delivery." That is rubbish. If the var had been missing a spare wheel, for example, would you accept it not being there when you picked up the car?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
  • The car is a Honda rather than a Citroen which will probably complicate things a little, although if the salesman is to be believed the garage used to be a Honda dealer.

There is a service book, but it isn't the original one. The salesman told me after i had bought it that he had put together a new service book.

I will defo ring them tomorrow regarding the parcel shelf. Thanks for your help.

I'd expect the car to be in the same condition I'd inspected it and agreed to buy it.

I'd expect a car to be a complete car.

    Why did you accept this??

If you want to set any store by this in the future, get the garage to give you a letter explaining how they constructed this history.
