Replacing HOST after

Hi,

I had the same problem that alot of people have had over the past couple of days with a virus that changed my background and told me I was infected and needed to buy their protection.

I followed the steps that have were posted on this forum from another site (bleepingcomputer.com) in normal mode as I couldn't run the malware program in safe mode but got a little stuck at the very last step. I deleted the HOST as instructed and downloaded the new one but it wouldn't let me save it in the same location as the old one had been.
I've saved it in my documents for now but is there a way around this.
My laptop seems much better now, but there's a number of start up applications that failed when I rebooted (I assume this is because of the HOST problem).
Any advice?

Thank You.

providing you are sure there isn't one there (with rogue entries in).

the default one is some text which doesn't do anything, and

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    !!

    OK..

Click on Start, Programs and RIGHT CLICK on Explorer and select "Run as Administrator"

Copy the HOSTS file to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Gah! I had this problem too but got as far as the OP. I wasn't able to download all of the information either. I hadn't seen this post and went looking for administrator as it kept saying I needed administrator settings or something to do something.
Now I can't even connect to the internet. I'm not sure what is happening with it, I have run the rkill thing again and then put the malwarebytes thing back on. It didn't want to go and then suddenly started. I'm going to have to go to bed and leave it running as the kids are back at school again tomorrow :(
Does anyone know what I may have done to it? It seemed to be working even with the cdrive system32 jobby deleted, it still brought up my half completed sudoku on the desk top which is somehow linked to the internet.
The internet is definately on but just not recognising from my laptop. I have checked and the wifi is on.
I'm hoping tht when I get up in the morning I can just do this from above but would be grateful for some extra help along the way!
