Hi, the Macmillan cancer helpline advised us to ask British Gas if we can go onto their social tariff when our tie-in finishes in March.

Our winter bill was about £450 and I'mm not sure I can cope with another one like that this year, but hubby has to be kept warm now.

Is the social tariff cheaper than the other options like websaver, I can't find the cost anywhere?

I dont think its all that much cheaper, probably not much in it tbh. All energy providers have to provide a social tariff but they can vary in what criteria they allow people on. Was £450 just for heating? if it was then that's high. I know just recently customers on social tariff with BG got £50 bonus, although mine as £48 no idea why that was.

You could get regularly bills using energy smart where you submit readings every month and just pay by dd every month you get a energy monitor too.

Thanks Savemoney, I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see what they come up with. The bill's heating, cooking and hot water. I've got duelfuel, the elec was quite high this year too.

BG were giving out free insulation to customers I think they still can and also you get nectar points now, okay it aint much but better in our pocket might be a cd or two at xmas.

    My bills for gas

    Nov - Dec £102 (3471.26 kWh)
    Dec - Jan £97 (2754.11 kWh)
Jan - Feb (not in yet until 1st march but estimate (2667 kWh)

I take readings on 25th of each month and submit them to BG

I have hot water (combi) gas cooker and GCH also have a stove in dining room (not on every night)

I have to keep heat on when eldest is at home which is quiet often as she suffers acute cold

Its a worry isnt it when you have some one disabled or ill?

Thanks, the loft insulation is fairly new.
It is a worry yes, but they have to be kept warm don't they, I know there has been times when I've been out and he's switched it off completley as he worries about the bill being high.
