sky router - can't connect when firewall switched back on

I have just switched to Sky broadband and have set the router up as instructed. The wireless connection works fine on this laptop and all other wireless devices in the house.

I also have the yellow ethernet cable connected exactly as instructed into our desktop PC and can connect to the internet using IE8 when the Firewall and anti-virus (F-secure) are disabled, but not when they are switched back on (normal settings) - it just comes up with the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. When I cick on the 'diagnose connection problems' button it tells me that the connection is fine.

I am using F-secure on two other laptops which are connecting fine when the firewall and anti-virus are switched on.

I am now at a loss as to what else I can do as I clearly can't leave the PC unprotected - any suggestions?

    which firewall.

Is it the firewall or the antivirus causing the problem?

It is the F-secure firewall. I just tried switching that off and leaving the anti-virus on and it connects fine, but as soon as I switch the firewall back on the same "cannot display the web page" message occurs.

you'll have to dig around the fsecure firewall settings to trust the router ip subnet 192.168.x.x, or disable the firewall completely (or using windows firewall instead).

Once you have a router, a software firewall isn't essential

Thank you, but I'm not sure how to do the first part. Is that something I do from within the F-secure settings?

Then disable f-Secure and use the Windows firewall.

Outbound firewalls are more trouble than they are worth, if you don't want to switch to windows firewall :

Thanks. I have now turned the f-secure firewall off and the windows firewall on and it is connecting fine.

Why has this problem not occurred on the laptops though?

difficult to answer, a settings somewhere is blocking access to the router, if you inadvertently clicked a "block" popup this would cause it.
