Best tip: don't take your junk with you!

I've moved home 6 times in the last 30 years and after the first couple of moves I realised that I'd stuff that I'd not looked at since I moved the last time.

Don't be sentimental, it's just stuff, so chuck it out and save yourself some time (and maybe money).
  • I been going threw my stuff today and managed to bin 4 bin bags full of rubbish out of the cellar and 30 things gone on Ebay,
going to look at the new house tomorrow.
    Brilliant Ideas guy's
    Thanks

  • I'm in the middle of my umpteenth move in the last 8 years and could pretty much do it with my eyes closed now. We've always moved ourselves.

I have about a 10 page to do list that has everything from what needs packing down to the final hoover - complete with boxes to tick everything off. I also split it into "can be done now" "week before the move" "final night in house" and "move day". It's here you put down all the odd jobs that need fixing, what can be packed and when and final cleaning bits that need doing (we rent so this stage is important in getting deposits back).

I second (third? fourth? ) having a proper clear out and be ruthless about it!

Get boxes - ideally a set which you can easily stack on top of each other. I bought the moving house packs from Argos last move and the boxes are still going strong for this move and will definitely stay in the attic for storage at the new place. It's not the money saving option but for the convenience they were well worth it. Label all of the boxes with which room they're destined for and everything you've put in them - do this on the top and one side of the box so that it can be read when boxes are piled up.

On the topic of boxes, I prefer duct tape for sealing them up - especially the bottoms of heavier ones. It's much stickier and so more secure than the thin, brown parcel tape you can get.

Packing dishes and such - fleece is a great cushion and for me, works better than bubble wrap and is cheaper. I just cut squares about the size of face cloths and layered them inbetween plates and such - you could get a cheap fleece throw from Ikea (£3) and use them afterwards as dusters.

If you have a spare room, do empty it first and use it for storing boxes over the few weeks prior to the move. You'll feel much better if you can't see the boxes wherever you turn!

Do pack a box of essentials. Loo roll, kettle, tea bags, a book - whatever you need to make your first night as easy as possible. Take it in the car with you, rather than mix it up with all the other boxes.

When you get there, unpack one room as soon as you can that you can hide in, away from the chaos. You might choose the living room - I usually choose the kitchen so that we can stop living on takeaways and rubbish asap (saves money!)

Do arrange post office redirection and try to give all other companies (phone, broadband, satellite/cable) at least 2 weeks notice to avoid disconnection/reconnection charges and delays in having services set up

That was a bit lengthy and I know I'll have missed bits out (it's 11pm and I'm shattered!) but hope that helped some

Hi there we have just moved hopefully for the last time! I will 2nd Esio Trot about duct tape or gaffer tape. As we were using the pound shop brown tape which does the job but you need a lot to secure the box so maybe false economy! However when it came to tape up really sturdy boxes it would not stick the box down had to buy Gaffer tape form wilko's. Will also recomend having a clear out and taking to the tip or putting it on freecycle. Also don't forget to ask or look out for boxes on freecycle or ask at local shops if they have any could also see if you can get some cheap boxes on ebay. I would also write on each box what's inside and what room it is to go in! We always get a man with a van to move us as seems to work out cheaper or the same price when you do it yourself. Also please package all delicate items carefully as even on a short journey accidents can happen. Trust me I Know.

Finally good luck with the move hope it goes well.
