Yep, MS Money does the job, no longer supported by MS but it still works
As other poster pointed out, the final arbiter and solution is in your hands, there is no magic software bullet
MS Money will let you see just where your money goes, only you can judge if the money was wasted or well spent, so if you spend £15 a day in Starbucks / McDonald's / Weatherspoon's etc then it is up to you to make a judgement to continue or notGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0 -
Use free web softwares like (like moneygement, clearcheckbook etc). Leave your wallet at home when you go out!0

Why not start with the budget planner under free tools on this site, scroll down and it's on the right hand side of the screen?0

I use Yodlee MoneyCenter - it's US based, but has all the UK banks too: you put in your bank username and password, and it automatically searches your transactions and categorises them, giving you some charts and statistics.
It's not for everyone - you might not feel comfortable handing over your username and password, but it's used by a number of banks in the US.0 -
In the UK, Money Dashboard and Lovemoney have both recently launched, using Yodlee technology for their platform. However, not all PFM services have proved successful: Kublax - another Yodlee customer - folded in February after running out of cash while US pioneer Wesabe, which operated in the UK through a partnership with the Daily Telegraph, has also gone to the wall.
and
- it has promise, and is pushing hard for a UK base where it is needed. It however is a bit suss [ no more than most businesses ] on its analysis and POA terms CLAIM. So far however for a cloud based operation its customer accounts are safe .
POA as follows :

YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT WHEN Yodlee IS ACCESSING AND RETRIEVING INFORMATION FROM THIRD PARTY SITES,YODLEE IS ACTING AS YOUR AGENT, AND NOT THE AGENT OR ON BEHALF OF THE THIRD PARTY. I use Moneydance (moneydance.com) which is full-featured, runs on PCs and Macs and has excellent support (at help.infinitekind.com/). You can download a free trial.
However, I'd recommend you try a free way of tracking your expenses first. If you're able to keep it up for a month, then consider buying something to help you do it more efficiently. Quicken, MS Money, Moneydance etc will all do the job.0 -

.... you put in your bank username and password, and it automatically searches your transactions and categorises them, giving you some charts and statistics.
This is a very very stupid thing to do in my opinion....
ANY fraud activity on your account and the bank will wash it's hands saying you gave your username and password out freely.......
And besides - more and more online banking does this now anyway (LloydsTSB does)“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0
