Samsung LCD TV problem

I wonder if someone can help with a problem. I have just bought a Samsung 40" LCD TV and connected it to my V+ HD box and my Philips HTS3164 Surround sound system. They surround sound works fine with a DVD, but I cannot get it to work with the TV. Where have I gone wrong? I have HDMI from V+ box to the TV and a scart from the TV to the surround sound.
Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.

Not sure if the scarts carry audio output if you are simultaneously using an HDMI connection.
You would do better using the optical output from the TV.
Has the V box got an audio out?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

The TV has Digital Audio Out (Optical) and the V+ box has Optical Audio out

Unfortunately the Philips box seems very limited and doesn't appear to have a separate digital audio in.

If the V+ box supports SCART, I'd try the leads the other way round, with HDMI between TV and surround sound box, and select the "HDMI input mapping" in the setup menu.

Sorry, unless the Philips box has an optical input or a HDMI input you're not going to be getting surround sound from anything other than when its playing DVDs. You need to connect the optical out or HDMI from the V+ box to the surround sound.

If you've got a DVD player with built in surround sound, you may find yourself out of luck and it is for this reason I hate the chuffing things.

You aren't going to get surround sound without connecting the V+ box to the surround sound system with an HDMI input or optical input, neither of which it has. SCART can't carry surround sound signals.

The nearest approximation you'll be able to get is to connect the audio output using the phono inputs, and setting the Phillips to a 'virtual surround' mode like Dolby ProLogic II.
