.I only have 4 years till I am 60 and due for it anyhow, but these ATOS staff - who have no idea of the hell you go through - well they don't give a toss. what annoys me is that for half of my life I paid every month into this scheme - yet THEY treat us all like it's their money!!

I have enormous sympathy for your problems and others in this thread... but the issue is that the amount that you have actually paid into the scheme is a small fraction of what is needed to actually "buy" your pension..the rest comes from our bankrupt nation via our taxes as there is no separate pot of money put aside.
So many people have abused public pension schemes in the past (1000s of teachers come to mind!!)that the powers that be,have overreacted and have screwed the systems down probably too tightly now.
Private industry pension schemes rules for ill health retirement were tightened up 20 years ago because they were being abused, often by managers, who used them as a way of buying off troublesome employees.....public schemes are now just catching up.

As an aside, maybe you need to check her pension age - I'm not sure it's 60 as you state as pensionable age for women changed - details and calculator here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretirementplanning/StatePension/DG_4017919

Hi, new to this forum, but found you when I put in NHS pension on ill health grounds refused! yes I am another one. I am a nurse and after a serious back injury in 1997 I was off work for nearly 6 months. But I improved so went back to work. I was okay for 3 years then the pain started to get worse again...eventaully had an x ray, small fracture of spine. So, tried again, had time off went back to work etc but the pain in my legs as well as back wasawful, some days I couldn't move... and guess what the NHS refused my pension! even though it was the b.......y NHS that CAUSED my injury!! So, I appealed, was put back. Now have just re applied, after a few falls it is getting worse...I only have 4 years till I am 60 and due for it anyhow, but these ATOS staff - who have no idea of the hell you go through - well they don't give a toss. what annoys me is that for half of my life I paid every month into this scheme - yet THEY treat us all like it's their money!! But, this time I won't give in, I 'm all ready putting a letter together for the ombudsman..cause I know it will be turned down. I have read your accounts with grief, what these people are putting others through is disgraceful.
We must not give into this crap - we should all complain about this. who are ATOS anyhow? I thought it was something to do with IKEA...
    Good luck everyone.

Hi, I feel so sorry for you. My wife feels the same about all the yrs paying into it, take the point that it costs more than she paid into it, but one of the reasons people joined the scheme in the first place was because they thought they would be looked after if the worst happened. I know there must be some in the past who abused the system. In my wife's case she just wanted to carry on working until her normal retirement age as she loved her job I don't think they take any of that into consideration esp when she'd only have a few yrs left to work anyway. It has changed to 65 in the 2008 scheme but my wife belonged to the 1995 scheme & retirement age is still 60.

Hope someone posts a succesful claim soon, good luck
  • HI, yes I have no doubt some people have abused the system, it always happens regardless of whether it's public or private. And yes, I know of teachers who have received their pension early then trotted off and done some other work. So, this means we should all suffer? That's unfair, and this new government has certainly got it in for 'us', not our faults the private pensions were bad. A friend of mine - another nurse, had a private one, and she didn't pay half what I did every month. She never expected to get what I would either. I have been a nurse most of my life, this scheme I joined in 1993 - so I am expected to retire at 60. I feel betrayed, I never expected a Private firm like ATOS to yeild such power.
And like many others on this site, I really hope I hear of someone actually getting their pension on ill-health grounds. Good luck to everyone.

Hi there I am sorry your struggling to get what in my opinion is rightfully yours, and hope you have better look with the ombudsman. I dont agree that it should be the likes of ATOS who mke the decision about pensions they do not know what you are going through, these people make the decisoins for ESA DLA an so forth its seems unfair and I feel the decisions should be made by a doctor who knows you. LIke you my hubby was a nurse, didnt want to retire, is only 47 and paid into his pensions for over 20 years. We have been told we should hear around the 15th March about his appeal but like you I think we too will be contacted the ombudsman. Good luck though stand by your guns:)

Hope your husband gets a positive result Dialysis, good luck.

My wife's application was under the old rules (pre ap 08) & she just has to prove she cant do her current job, but as she no longer has that job i was hopeful she would get it. Going to go to see her GP next week to see if he can help anymore... I'd be interested to know if you were succesful so will check out the thread to see if you update, cheers dontunderstand.
Thanks for this I hope you get the result you want with regards to your wifes pension it is so unfair being put through all this its hard enough being ill I think after four years of being ill thats proof enough I mean what the b....y hell do they want sorry but it really gets my goat, and thats putting it politely. Good luck with everything and keep us posted.
  • I'm going to write & ask for all the documents they used to evaluate the appeal tomorrow. Then I'm going with her to her GP appt to see what he says as I still think they're stating he has been negligent in her 4 yr care (if as they say more should have been done).

She has one appeal left then of course the Ombudsman too!
Hope you let us know too, shouldn't have too long to wait now! After saying that my wife's took sooo long from the original letter in Oct- Feb!!

    Any news yet Dialysis?
No nothing yet think my postman thinks I am stalking him:) what about u?
  • Hi dialysis, yes it gets like that doesn't it? It's stressful waiting for him everyday. Hopefully you will hearbsoon. I've not been able to help my wife yet (I need to do it for her) as i've been working away, just home for a couple of days then away again for another week then I'm going to get onto it, I'm not going to just fade away which is probably what they'd like. As we know, but others may not, this wasn't just something for nothing it was a contributary pension that was supposedly for retirement & to guard against the unthinkable i.e; ill-health. If someone been unable to work for over 4 yrs thus being unable to have an income & provide further for their age related retirement in 4 yrs time then I think we are right to fight the decision of someone who has not even seen her & how she is debilitated but just going by what "should" happen - we're people not text-book people! Sorry, rant over!! dontunderstand
