I know it is not exactly legal but when my sister's OH died she transferred all his money from his bank accounts to hers along with the direct debits she would still have to pay and still hasn't told the bank/closed any accounts..

All his banking could be done online.

    She knew all the passwords.

And she doesn't get upset when she gets a letter addressed to him.

She has also told her only son to do the same when she goes.

Sounds strictly illegal to me

That's another problem with the internet. It has the potential for otherwise honest people to commit fraud.

They would use someone's UN & PW to "solve a problem" and think it was OK whereas they would know that forging a signature was obviously illegal and fraud.
  • My late husband had an account with Cahoot which was "paperless". The account actually comprised a savings account, a current account and a credit card and I had no idea how to access the accounts after he died.

Cahoot were quite happy to deal with the account from the information I was able to provide from the cards held from Cahoot and the account was closed and monies distributed without any issue once they had seen his death certificate and received a small estates form back.

I see the potential problem for those needing paper copies of utility bills but I've provided internet print outs of bank statements to several bodies including the DWP and they have been happy to accept them.
