  • Hard work is not something I have ever shied away from. Its finding the right product and the right supplier at the right price. Now THAT is the trick, and of course, having the money and the balls to actually go for it.

I have to say I wouldnt want to use Ebay to build my business. I am sure the potential is there to make the turnover but I think ebay are the winners when it comes to the profit. I would rather put the effort in to build up my own site to sell through and at least then I know that whatevers left is mine:-)

no reason they have to be exclusive
eBay is a great way to get traffic and repeat custom through your own site

When I worked for a book-keeper one of our clients was an ebay seller with a turnover well in excess of this. She bought and sold large volumes of small value items, largely from China and surrounds. In our local newspaper this week there is a story about 2 brothers who have grown a business selling wellies on ebay, here's a link to the story:

My advice would be to make sure you keep records right from the start, e.g. purchase invoices and receipts. This will make it much easier if you do manage to grow your business. Once you hit the VAT threshold they will have no mercy if you do not have records.

My business advisors best mate takes a £60k income each year.

She found her niche, her husband has now quit his full time job to help grow the business even more as "there's never enough time to package everything I need to send!" . My business advisor tells me her friend puts it down to finding the right wholesaler and knowing her market well.

I am a small time seller, but have come across many sellers who would consider £1500 per month net take home profit as a very bad month indeed.

The important thing I guess is selecting the right niche where there is a healthy demand for the product and at the same time there is limited competition. The hardest thing is to find it.
  • I guess I am just one msn looking for what everyone else is in this day and age. A break!
  • The problem with eBay is that the whole world and his dog are now selling things on it so most markets are saturated. It's a good place to pick up a bargain or sell something that is very rare but aside from that there will probably be 100 other people selling what you are and unless you are the cheapest no one will buy from you. It isn't impossible with the right stock but working out what that is and then finding a supplier cheap enough so that you can make money reselling is very difficult.

Any mums out there who want to make a bit of pin money on ebay, remember you can list 100 items a month without paying any listing fees.

They must be auction format and not have a start price of more than 99p.

I know it isn't a lot to some on here but if you manage to make £5 a day you will have about £1500 allowing for days without listing on holiday etc to spend at Christmas.

I am aiming for £35 per week and plan to transfer £150 from my Paypal account on the first day of each month ie money from my previous months sales. Hopefully I will have £1800 in my B/S account at the end of the year.

It's surprising what you will find that will sell around the house that you may have been ready to bin!
