A bit of a tale so here goes - I had a phone call yesterday from a foreign call centre apparently that works with Microsoft to say I had a problem with my IP address, I ended the call quickly without giving any details. The call niggled me so I had a quick look at computer, AVG runs everyday, I hadnt notice but a rootkit was found three days ago, hidden, has not been found in any further AVG scans, panicked I ran Malwarebytes full scan, nothing found there, AVG run another scan this morning and nothing found again. If the rootkit was still there would it still be found in the scans or has it gone? Sorry perhaps not making much sense but can a rootkit just disappear like this! I apologise in advance for the lack of understanding x

Ignore the phone call. It was a scam to get you to hand over payment details/install malware onto your computer/both
If AVG and MWB are both coming up clean then you're probably fine0 -
yep/ it's a setup/ don't be the patsyBLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Hi
Thanks for your replies, I did think that the call was a bit suspect.......going back to the rootkit - AVG did find it but could not delete it as it was hidden...........if the rootkit was still there would it still show in scans? I dont have anything strange going on with my computer, as said earlier I have run Malwarebytes (full scan) as well as AVG and nothing shows now! Am really confused....has the rootkit gone?0 -
Hi
I've had 2 calls so far. When questioned they have no idea what they're talking about. I was told I had a virus on my broadband line.:rotfl::rotfl:Told both of them where to go.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -
I have had quite a few of these calls over the last few months!
We have caller display and the numbers usually comes up as international which generally turns out to be something dodgy as no-one I know ever phones me from "abroad"!!
I have now started saying sorry you must have the wrong number as I don't have a computer! :rotfl:
We are on the TPS list (Telephone Preference Service to stop nuisance calls - I'm not allowed to post a link yet) and I called them about it but they are unable to stop foreign calls."Things can only get better.................c/o D:Ream #The 90's"

where was the rootkit, what was the filename, and which one was it.
a rootkit if executed can hide itself from virus scanners

Hi
This is what the AVG log says:-
Object name: C:\documentsandsetting\alison\cookies\alison@tacoda.at.atwola[2].txt
Detection name: hidden file
Object type: file
SDK: Rootkit
Result: object is hidden
Nothing shows on further scans, your thoughts would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
Alison.

clear your cookies with ccleaner.
If nothing shows up with kaspersky, I wouldn't worry about it.
but you could get a better antivirus, eg avast 6 free
I'm assuming you didn't let the scammers have access to your pc?!!

Thank you Closed I shall run ccleaner and Kaspersky. In addition to running Malwarebytes after AVG I also ran Sophos Anti rootkit which didnt come up with any nasty hidden files. The phone call was swiftly dealt with and no details where given. I have never had any problems with AVG before, a full scan is run everyday, malwarebytes less often and my computer is set up to delete cookies on exit so I really dont understand the rootkit............... ah well probably because I've only just worked out how to use the VCR!
Many thanks

you shouldn't need to run full scans every day, resident virus scanners detect on access!!
