Only advice I can suggest is DO NOT give the finance company ANY of your personal details or more importantly address so they can't come round one day and take it.
As NeverAgain says, I'd disagree over the fact they're mates. If the mate was the one who owed the finance then yes, but as its the owner before him then I'd say they were both innocent purchasers. Whether a court would agree or not I don't know.0 -

Only problem is if you have no other choice than to register it at your home address. A quick search by the finance company on the DVLA database and Bob's their uncle.The man without a signature.0
