Which security should I use?

  • Had Aviva, Avast, AVG and a whole load of other free ones at different times over the years but junked the last of them a few months ago in favour for windoze security essentials. I was fed up with all the crap the free ones give out, continual update requirements and so forth.

Going forward I'll be using the KISS principle.

Avira is one of the best for detection rate but the free version doesn't include online detection so you will be at risk of drive by virus/trojan attacks. Using Sandboxie can help prevent that king of thing.

The only problem I have with Avira is the latest versions give no option to override any detection which is damn annoying as Avira can be very trigger happy. Even well known software can get detected if the Heuristics is set to high. I am sure it was once possible to override a detection and allow it to proceed as normal. But now it auto blocks it with no override even with interactive mode enabled.

It really lets down Avira for me.

BTDTGTS At the time, it took a lot of finding but it's quite simple:
Obviously make sure that what you think is a false positive is really a false positive. Scan the file with MBAM.

If you select Ignore on the detection of your false positive then Avira will ignore it for the current session only.

To permanently ignore a file first make a note of where the file is.
You have to tell the scanner and the virus guard to ignore the file.

Open Avira select Extras>configuration and ensure expert mode is ticked
Tick the "+" next to Scanner then the "+" next to Scan then click on Exceptions
Now click in the "...." box and navigate to the file you want to ignore than click Add - which should add the file to the list in the box.

    Repeat the process for Guard

    Job done
