Nationwide ATM

Went to my local Nationwide ATM to draw cash ,as I have done in the past at no charge, and was confronted by an anouncemant on the screen to the effect that a charge of a minimum of £ 2.00 would apply to the transaction. Is this to apply to all Nationwide ATMs ( I am not a Nationwide account holder) and is this the start of yet another round of bank charges?

Nationwide ATMs bear the message (something like):

"Your bank may charge you for this transaction; Nationwide won't [ever?] charge you for the use of this ATM. Please confirm you wish to go ahead"

So basically it isn't Nationwide's 'fault' - that charge does not go to them and they aren't the ones repsonsible.

[It helps if you can identify which account this relates to and the bank]

Sound quite unlikely given a quote at the beginning of the year
Nationwide has campaigned against charging cash machines, and for greater transparency at ATMs, for eight years.

Nationwide has asked bank and building society chief executives to commit to the following pledge:

    Pledge to Keep Free ATMs

1 - All bank and building society ATMs should be free to use

2 - Free ATMs should have a standard "free" green sign so that consumers can see at a glance whether or not they will be charged

3 - Banks and building societies should not sell off their free ATMs

    · Research** reveals that 93% of British adults think that it is unacceptable to be charged to withdraw their own money from cash machines.

    · Research** reveals that 97% of people think that all cash machines should bear either a red or green sign to make it clear at a glance whether or not they charge.

    · In 1999, there were virtually no charging cash machines in the UK but today 43% of machines charge customers, and this is rising.

    · Almost 24,000 of the UK’s 56,000 cash machines now charge.

    · Nationwide has introduced clear and unambiguous signage on its cash machines: the large wording "FREE CASH WITHDRAWALS" on a bright green background will enable consumers to see ‘at-a-glance’ that they will not be charged. The Society believes that the industry should act so that all free machines carry a green "free cash withdrawals" sign and all charging machines carry a sign stating "This machine CHARGES a FEE for withdrawals" on a red background.
    1. Was this a debit or credit card?
    2. Are you sure the machine hadnt changed to a fee paying moneybox atm?
    3. Does has your bank started charging?
  • Are you sure the machine is still owned by Nationwide - they are sometimes sold on or rented
  • Silly question I know, but it was a debit card you were using not a credit card?

It sounds to me like he or she was using a credit card. Was the ATM in a petrol station or something like that? Or was it a branch?

I know this is a little unrelated, but I tried to get some money out of a 'moneybox' cashpoint on friday night. The money didn't come out but I checked my balance and the money had actually been deducted.

Any ideas please of what to do? I've contacted my bank but the cashpoint doesn't have a contact number on it so I'm afraid I've lost my money. Anyone help please?

Your bank should give you advice on how to reclaim the money.

Your bank will have a record of which ATM the transaction took place at. Ask them to send an ATM dispute form to you. They will then send this off to the ATM owner who will reconcile the machine.
