Problem with toilet - advice please

Hi

We have recently (2 weeks ago) bought a property circa 1960's which we are currently renovating and not living there.

However tonight when I went to flush the downstairs toilet the toilet did not flush the paper away, so when I pressed the button again it filled up near to the top of the bowl and then slowly started to drain away until there was any water in the toilet.

I waited 20 mins and tried again and again the water filled up nearly to the top of the pan and again it slowly drained away until there was hardly any water left in the toilet?

Any ideas on whats wrong - is it the drains that would cause this?

Get a plunger or bog brush and try to push the cr4p through. Who is renovating your property as people do have a tendency to empty buckets full of crud in to the loo.

It would point to a blockage.

Can you see a manhole cover outside? If you can pick it up to see what you have.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

ok thanks - no nothing has been put down the toilet apart from no 1's - in the survey we had done it did mention
The lid to this inspection chamber was lifted and some silting was noted within the drainage run, with debris also present to the shoulders of the chamber. This would suggest either a slow flow or blockage in the past and ideally should be further checked
When I lift the manhole cover what should I be looking for (any pics) and how would I resolve the problem - with a hosepipe or rod? and how would I do it?

With the cover up, get someone to flush the toilet and see what happens.

This is a fix I have used, you take a mop, when you have flushed and the bowel is full put the mop carefully in the bowel gently lift the mop head up and down, this will move the blockage up and down in the pipe and break it up. as the water goes down flush again. This should clear it unless it is a damaged drain pipe. regards bri..:)

    Absolute agony.

    Take the 'e' out!!!

    OP.
If you lift the lid on a blocked manhole you won't need to ask what to look for.

Follow the manhole trail (if there is more than one) when you get a dry one rod from there. Otherwise rod from the blocked one. The 4" disc is good for 'plunging' Don't unscrew when turning the rods.
