Hello

I know this will be a silly question to most but....

What big items should you expect on certain intervals of services i.e. cam belt at 50,000 (hope that's right).

Also how can you tell if they've been done (when buying a second hand vehicle)? Is it just a case or hoping that they provide the service invoice and hoping it's noted on there?

The big items are going to vary depending on the car make, so it's going to be difficult for anyone to accurately answer this question without knowing what car(s) you are looking at. Some big items that you might want to know about apart from the cam belt are anti freeze and brake fluid. You can test the efficacy of antifreeze but I don't know how you can test the brake fluid.

The individual items are never listed in a service book and I doubt many would keep the paperwork. Even if the book is stamped, it doesn't mean the proper service was done.

And unless you're going to start ripping the car to bits, you're not going to be able to tell if they've been done in the last couple of thousand miles. For example, one thing that must be changed annually on my car is the pollen filter. Its hidden behind a plastic panel and takes a good 10 minutes to get at, take out, inspect and replace.

The exact service schedule is detailed in the hand book and a main dealer service will produce a checklist of things done to match that schedule. I always keep those checklists attched to the invoice. I appreciate that is not a guarantee that things were done.
