Design challenge - need new bedroom furniture

I'm looking for some design advice. Normally I'm quite clear on what I want in terms of furniture but I'm a bit stumped on this.
I recently bought a new bed - this one. It's beautiful and I'm delighted with it, it's the super kingsize and the room doesn't need a lot of furniture to go with it.
The current bedroom furniture is Stag Minstrel (this is the same range) and I just don't think it is modern enough for the bed so I'm on the hunt for some new things (I knew this bed would end up costing a fortune).
I was thinking of 2 bedside chests, one tall chest of drawers and a normal sized chest of drawers (hubby has a 32 inch lcd tv which he insists has to stay).
My choice of bedlinen is fairly traditional - this is it here. It's not as cream as it looks in the photo - more gold/cream if that makes sense.
I feel the furniture needs to be modern without being too much so. I just deperately don't want the room to be old fashioned and stuffy.
I had kind of fallen in love with this but the dimensions aren't quite right and I don't like the silver coloured "feet" things.
Any thoughts from interior experts??
p.s. I have no real preference on colour/finish of wood.

Light oak is absolutely lovely, modern and contemporary
and very fashionable.
(I like the bed
) make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks - it's the comfiest bed ever but I will never allow hubby to go shopping again- it may have been on sale but once we'd added the mattress and all the bedding it cost a small fortune.
however on the plus side it's so big it takes him a week to find me:D:D:D:D
I quite like the idea of oak. I'm thinking lighter wood would be good and , as you say, a bit more contemporary. I'm sure I saw a nice furniture shop on Great Western Road which had nice oak in the window so I'm off to try and track it down.NO FARMS = NO FOOD0 -
A different idea,as you have a sleigh bed, what about French style furniture, bought seperately and painted yourself in off- white or cream or grey in farrow and ball paint shades?
Stain the handles of the furniture dark oak to tie in with the colour of the bed legs ?
Farrow and ball do a nice colour for walls-grey-called charlotte grey-you could get a paint match with another company.0 -
I know it is MSE but I'm too busy (and a little lazy) to paint my own furniture although I like the idea.
I'm pondering over this Sonoma range from M&S. I visited instore at the weekend and I do like it, just debating if it is a little "chunky" to be sleek. I guess it's just so far removed from what I have just now.
Was thinking of 2 bedside chests, one 5 drawer chest and a 6 drawer tall chest.
I need to make up my mind tomorrow though as the 20% off ends tomorrow night.NO FARMS = NO FOOD0 -
I have a similar bed (also superkingsize and deliciously comfy!) and we bought Ikea Malm oak veneer chests of drawers for our room and I love them. This is our room.

Thanks for the photo - that looks really good. It's hard to imagine what it would look like next to lighter wood so it's great to see it.
I need to decide tonight if I want to spend the cash on the M&S stuff as the discount ends at midnight. Decision, decisions!NO FARMS = NO FOOD0 -
The bed is a beautiful strong curved sleigh in a strong colour and the bedding in your picture is very romantic- yet your aspirations are for a modern feel. The present stag furniture may be in keeping with the bedding you've pictured, but not the bed. The stag is dated, the bed is modern. I would start with the bed and make it truly modern and exciting by adding for example a textured fur throw, neutral oversize cushions and a modern artwork above. In a room with a dominant feature (like your super-large bed) it's best only to allow only one other thing to truly compete. That's what creates a modern sensibility and an exciting sense of space. So when you buy furniture, get more plain stuff, don't bother with surface wood patterns on the furniture that will compete with the bed, but leave money to invest in beautiful lamps with utterly gorgeous shades either side of the bed. Also what colour and texture are the walls? I think I know the Shop you mean in Gt Western Road! Do you ever visit that gorgeous shop downstairs in De Courcey's 'Nancy Smillie' I think it's called?scottishminnie wrote: »I'm looking for some design advice. You've kind of summed up what I feel. Whilst the bedding is beautiful I'm kind of sorry I bought it now as I should have been braver and chosen something more modern. I can't justify buying another set given what I've already spent.
I think I'll hold off on the M&S furniture and head along Great Western Road - I've never been in the one downstairs but I think it would be a good place to look for accessories etc. It's a very pale green carpet and eau de nil wall colour which was what made me stick with the cream bedding - wishing I'd gone for pure white now!NO FARMS = NO FOOD0 -
Does Great Western Road still have 'Colonial' they've got oversize pieces too, or are they in Woodlands Road...Nancy Smillie is an expensive inspiration you know, the lane with De Courcey's arcade, off Byres Road, scottishminnie wrote: »You've kind of summed up what I feel. So, the walls and carpet and bedding sound nice and neutral and won't compete. It's funny, but I've a feeling that the cream will slightly damp the WOW factor that your after unless you lift it up again by making it as fresh looking as possible. Maybe a small aubergine cushion would be great with the bed and the bedding and eau de nil. Aubergine and plum and cerise look very modern yet are so arty when mixed together.
Oh, just another thought about the M&S furniture in your picture. Yes it's nice, but it may be slightly too blocky and officey for your curvy bed. I can't help feeling that the more minimal in this case, the more impact. What do you think?0 -

You can read my mind! The M&S beside chests had "blocks" at each corner and that was my hesitation - they were almost cube like if that makes sense. I would like something "finer" and sleek. I'm definitely going to head GWR way- I'd forgotten about Colonial -that gives me even more options!NO FARMS = NO FOOD0
