D/D downloaded a free trial of m/s/o now it has run out her files cannot be opened from her laptop ,she has gone to use the uni library ie computer.She has looked at student computers and they want £100 for a copy any ideas that may help as I am over 50mls away and not very techie with computers .Thanks if you can advise.

Here you go Office 2010 for £38, you get a disc with the software on, you may have to carefully read the details as there might be an option to download the files but i cant remember so dont quote me
with her being a student i would have thought she would have sussed google out0 -

OpenOffice.org is free and will open office most office documents unless you are using something like Publisher. Word and Excel are no problem for it.0

Once she sorts out a new copy of Office, tell her to set Word & Excel (the most commonly used apps) to default to saving in Word 97-2003 (.doc) and Excel 97-2003 (.xls) formats respectively. That will mean that the files can then be opened in older versions of Office that haven't had the Office Compatibility Pack installed.

Many thanks people,D/D has downloaded Open office retrieved her files,now is o/p a trial or would jt be worth buying m/so £38(will this be a genuine copy )as she has another 2yrs at uni.She has taken on board all your advice,and will follow it ,she also sends her thanks.0
