we roll up a duvet lengthways like a bolster under the sheet of the bed at the outside edge (hoping that description makes sense lol) and also a blanket at the wall side if there is a small gap between the mattress and the wall- we take my sons quilt and pillow if we go away as it makes him feel at home so perhaps your nephew could just bring those if he stays...
  • when my kids were little they went straight into a proper bed on there 2nd birthday, with a normal duvet, never had bed guards, bad mum that i am lol, but i did always put lots of pillows/cushions on the floor
loves to knit and crochet for others
  • ds1 was in a single bed at 18 months with a bed guard, he also had a bed tent at one point, more for fun than anything.

I'd also say you need a waterproof mattress cover! Accidents DO happen - and the one disadvantage of a double bed is that it can lead to a lot of laundry when they do.

Very good point! That didn't occur to me so am pleased you mentioned it as it's a decent mattress and don't really want it wee'd on!
  • Definately get a waterproof cover for the mattress. If/when he goes through the night training stage I find 'double bagging' the bed is much easier too - so a waterproof sheet, normal sheet, then a 2nd waterproof then a sheet. It means if he does have an accident you can just whip off the top layer and don't have to faff about making up the bed again.

Also if he does go through a stage of accidents consider giving him a single duvet. He's so wee he'll not need a double and a single is easier to wash.

I'd put a rolled up duvet or spare pillows and cushions on the floor in cash he rolls out, but wouldn't worry too much. If he does fall out often you could always just put the mattress on the floor.
  • If he enjoys using the travel cot and you don't think you'll need it again, you could do what I did. I've cut the end panel with a stanley knife on three sides, so it just hangs now. It's her little den and still at five years old we can't persuade her to part with it at the grandparents house! She takes her little travel dvd player into it with all her soft toys and really makes herself at home. I'm not complaining as it means I don't have to share my bed and she thinks it is a real adventure!

    oh very good point.

I was just going to say that we had a very long bedguard which went pretty much the full length of the bed.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • My dear GS came out of his cot before his baby brother was born when he was 2 years old.

He regularly stays at our house in a single bed, next to the wall, with no guard but old cushions/pillows on floor. He's in a cot bed at home (about 5 inches from the floor) and in a travel cot at his other grandma's but has no problems at all in our normal single bed. It may actually be a bit higher than normal too as there are drawers under the bed. I do agree on the waterproof sheet though!

To make it more 'special' I bought a new duvet (only had double/king size) and car design quilt cover (cheap from B&M bargains) and he absolutely loves it. I'm taking him away on a weekend break where he's sleep in a normal bed too, but will def take the waterproof sheet!
